Lusaka (Zambia): Dozens killed in one of the worst road mishaps in country's history


At least 53 passengers were perished in a terrible road accident involving a passenger bus, a car and a truck in central Zambia's Chibombo district in the wee hours of Thursday, a government official said. 

The bus belonged to the Zambia Postal Service and was heading from the Copperbelt mining province to Lusaka.

According to details; the accident happened near the town of Chifamba, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Lusaka when the bus heading from Ndola city to the Zambian capital Lusaka banged into a semi-truck and another car, making it one of the worst road mishap in the nation’s recent history
.
The bus is believed to have been carrying about 70 passengers. Fifty three passengers died on the scene, according to Zambia Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela, while 10 sustained injuries.

The death toll may rise as the rescue teams were still working to clear the damaged parts of bus.
