Facebook Deactivation Agreement for $200 -- Is it worth or not?

According to some media reports; a concerned dad has promised to pay $200 to his 14-year-old daughter if she quit Facebook. According to the deal Paul Baier will pay $200 to his teenage daughter Rachel Baier for quitting Facebook for five months.

Facebook Deactivation Agreement between Paul Baier and Rachel Baier

The most interesting part of the deal is that it’s not a verbal deal but in black-n-white duly signed by both the parties – Paul Baier and Rachel Baier – with dates specified precisely.

The wording of the written deal, with Facebook logo on it, read as follows:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Facebook Deactivation Agreement

“I Rachel Baier agree to deactivate my Facebook Account from 2/4/13 to 6/26/13.

In return, my dad, Paul Baier, agrees to pay me $50 on 4/15/13 and $150 on 6/26/13. He/she will have access to my Facebook to change the password and to deactivate the account. This will prevent me from re-activating the account in the future.  I plan to use the money for the following purposes: stuff

Signed and agreed in full:

Rachel Baier                                                                Paul Baeir

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It wasn't enough for the concerned Baul Baier, so he posted this “Facebook Deactivation Agreement” on his blog. In response to his posting he got some very interesting comments like:

One visitor ‘The Lark’ wrote ...

Hey Paul this is Mike Larkin from 1010 WINS radio station in New York City. We really love this story and want to interview either you or your daughter over the phone tonight. Let me know mlarkin@wins.com or 2123157090

And another visitor, RJS, commented ….

Great idea. I just read an online story about it. Perhaps, this will inspire other parents to do the same. Kudos, to you and your daughter!

Opinion:

For me the use of Facebook, the leading social media network in the world, is spreading like an addiction especially among youngsters. As we have heard all the way though our lives that “excess of everything is bad”, it also true for Facebook.

The increasing usage of Facebook among youngsters is not only hurting them psychologically, ethically and physically but it’s also hurting their studies and other social and physical activities.

I came across a shocking article “Facebook may be more dangerous than you think.” on Eye Guardian which states that half of all Americans are already on Facebook. The fastest growing segment of new users are pre-teens and teens. With over 250 million daily users, over 10 million of those are underage.

According to report; Sexting, cyber-bullying, online stalking are very common phenomena on Facebook, which are very difficult to handle by teens in most of the situations.

In short, when we allow underage kids onto sites such as Facebook - we are setting them loose on line to exposure to real life threats, child predators, inappropriate content and increased vulnerability to being involved in cyber bullying. We are putting our children in an unsafe situation.

The other point is by allowing our children to lie to open up a Facebook account, we are not sending them a good message. It’s okay to lie? It’s okay to lie about some things? According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, 38% of 12 year olds in the U.S. were using social networks in 2009. Perhaps it seems benign, right now, but the next step…just around the corner could be them lying about underage drinking.

Facebook Again Suspected for Using Users' Post-logout Data for Commercial Benefits

The number one social networking site Facebook is under heavy criticism for trailing and following its users even after they have signed out. Facebook users are tracked for the sites they visit after getting log out from Facebook. The cookies are not totally removed; therefore, the users' data is maintained by the website.

Facebook Again Suspected for Using Users' Post-logout Data for Commercial Benefits
It has already been declared by the Facebook management, in their privacy policy, that the user data is not entirely deleted after logging out just to ensure more protection to the users’ accounts. But, they stressed, the retained user data is not available to anyone else and the privacy of the user is also not compromised.

Contrarily, the experts say, Facebook enjoying a lot of benefits after analyzing the users’ post-logout information retained like figuring out trends among the users and improve the advertising in the website by giving out personalized advertisements to users.

Furthermore, advertisement being a core source for online businesses; Facebook might provide content that is specifically tailored for the person tracked after ascertaining the preferences of that user.

The question of Facebook privacy arose once again after Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), chairman of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, said on Wednesday that he would hold an inquiry to examine reports that Facebook tracks its users on the internet after they log out.

As the issue has become public, other websites will also face pressure from their users and consequently, authorities would be implementing stricter rules and regulations for online companies. Even if the tracked data is kept confidential, it should not be taken without the user's consent.

The company has assured the people in their recently issued statements that the data tracking is benefiting the users and is not being used to harm them. The procedure has been said to be different from the tracking done by other websites. Also the data is kept anonymous and privacy of any user is not intruded.

Facebook Mania: 1 Million Under Age Kids in UK Access Facebook Everyday

LONDON – A recent study conducted by Mintel, a London-based market research firm, concluded that about one million British under-teen children, aged between 7 and 12, use Facebook - a social networking platform with more than 800 million users worldwide - on a daily basis.

Under-age Kids Using Facebook
Ina Mitskavets, a researcher at Mitel, said, “Today's children are well versed in all aspects of the internet, with almost a million children aged seven to twelve using Facebook - highlighting just how popular the site has become.”

The study further suggests that 50 per cent the British children aged between 7 and 12 access social networking websites, out of which, 49 percent or around 970,000 access Facebook every single day. The study shows that more than half of the children accessed Facebook from their desktops while 10 per cent of children use mobile devices to use Facbook.

Although Facebook , restricts children under the age of 13 to join the social networking site but, according to another survey, parents of the children help their underage children to open accounts on Facebook.

The study also revealed that the rest of the 50% children accessing social networking platforms do it irregularly while only 5 percent of the children don't use it at all.

Pressure from their friends is a major reason which motivates children to create accounts on social networking platforms, the study concluded in the end.

Facebook Losing its Supremacy in Social Networking World
Facebook – definitely the king of social networks for almost half of last decade; but is it going to lose its supremacy in the field of social networking sites..??

Recent reports on Monday, published on mashable.com, suggest that Facebook is losing its users significantly in Canada and United States. According to data collected; Facebook lost 1.5 million users in Canada and about 6 million in U.S. during the last month.

Although Facebook is growing in terms of its overall number of users but the growth rate clearly tending to negative side; as Facebook gained 13.9 million users in April, and 11.8 million users in May – compared to a typical month in 2010 where the company gained 20 million users per month on average.

The reports on mashable.com further mentioned that if the present negative trend continues for next two months it would be an important sign for Facebook’s future.

Facebook continues to rule the social networking area with its mammoth number of active users which touch 687 million in the start of June 2011. Despite the slowed growth in North America, Facebook is getting more new users from countries that are late in adopting Facebook, such as India, Brazil, and Mexico.

Rundlett Middle School's 13-year-old Student Suspended on Bin Laden Comment Posted on Facebook

CONCORD, N.H. – “I wished Osama bin Laden killed my Math teacher.” These are the comments of a 13-year-old Rundlett Middle School student, she posted on her Facebook wall, for which she got 5-day suspension orders from her school administration.

Kimberly Dell'isola, the mother of the suspended girl, reacted in anger saying that she admitted the post was insulting but thought the punishment was too extreme and her daughter was entitled to free speech.

Dell'isola further said she generally kept an eye on her daughter's use of the social networking website but found out about this specific post when she received a phone call from the school's principal. She said a parent of one of the girl's friends reported the comment to school administration.

Rundlett Middle School’s principal Tom Sica refused to comment due to student privacy rights.
