Breaking News (Video Updates) -- U.S. Spy Drone RQ-170 Downed by Iran: Military Sources

TEHRAN, Iran (Dec. 04) – Iran’s military sources claimed that they have shot down an American spy drone on Sunday after it “briefly violated” Iranian territory in the east, near the Afghanistan and Pakistan borders.

Iranian media reports said the unmanned aerial vehicle - identified as a type RQ-170 - suffered minimum harm and was now in the hands of the armed forces.

The RQ-170 Sentinel is a inspection drone whose existence was made public in 2009 by specialized media, and later confirmed by the US Air Force in 2010.

Al Alam Arabic language satellite channel, quoting a military source, said the drone was shot down “a few hours ago.”

In January, Iran claimed that it had shot down two US drones after they violated Iranian-controlled airspace. Iran later said it would put the aircraft on public display.

The U.S. military and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) usually use drones to watch military activity in the region. U.S. have also reportedly used them to launch missile strikes in Yemen as well as in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s tribal belt.
