Sam Woodhead Missing: Family fears for teen lost in Australian outback

LONGREACH, Australia (Thu, Feb 14) – Search for missing British teen ended fruitless on Thursday in Australian outback near Longreach, Queen’s Land. Police launched a land and aerial search for English teenager after he failed to return from his outing on Tuesday evening.

Sam Woodhead Missing: Family fears for teen lost in Australian outback

The 18-year-old Sam Woodhead was last seen at Upshot Station, on Bogewong Alroy Rd. 130 kilometers southwest of Longreach, at around 5.30pm on Tuesday and police fear he has become lost or injured during a run. Woodhead had been staying at the remote Upshot Station for about 10 days.

The station owner reported him missing Wednesday morning after finding his bed empty. His backpack and a pair of jogging shoes were missing but other stuff including his wallet had been left behind at the station.

The family of missing youngster, intended to be an army officer in future, is desperately hoping he will be found safe and well - and will turn up asking 'what's all the fuss about'.

The father of a teenage backpacker missing in the Australian outback fought back tears today as he pledged to do everything 'physically, mentally, emotionally and financially' possible to find him.

Woodehead’s 54-year-old mother has flown out to Australia and the family has hired an extra helicopter with night vision equipment to help join the search effort. But so far no trace of the former head boy at Brighton College has been found.

The search on Thursday was called off about 5:00 pm as the sun set and will start again at first light on Friday but the teenager could survive in the outback for anywhere between a few hours and a few weeks, according to survival instructor Nick Vroomans.

"If he's moving during the day and working really hard, he could be gone in 24 hours," he said.

Woodhead, who is from London and went to Brighton College, had been experiencing the Outback during an Australian adventure that had previously included a visit to the Gold Coast.

100th anniversary of Titanic Disaster: The other love story -- Ann Elizabeth Isham gave her life for her dog

The world recalls the historic morning 100 years ago when the Titanic sailed out into the open sea to start its momentous journey, never to reach its destination.

100th anniversary of Titanic Disaster: The other love story
RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. (Via Wikipedia)

The apparently 'Unsinkable' liner began its journey on April 10, 1912 and met the tragedy on April 14, 1912 after hitting an iceberg off Newfoundland shortly before midnight and sinking two hours later, killing 1,514 passengers and crewmembers.

During the past 100 years everybody might have been talked about each and every aspect of this unfortunate liner, its passengers, its crewmembers and the luxuries provided therein; but have you thought about few four-footed passengers on board?

There were twelve dogs on the ill-fated Titanic, all belongs to 1st class passengers, and only three were survived the disaster. Those lucky three include a baby Pomeranian Lady, whose owner, Margaret Hays of New York City, covered her in a blanket and took her into a lifeboat.

The other two dogs to survive were also small, pedigreed pooches that travelled in cabins of their owners. Sun Yat-sen, a Pekingese belonging to Henry and Myra Harper (of the Harper & Row publishing dynasty) lived to yip another day, as did a Pomeranian belonging to Elizabeth Rothschild of New York.

The other 9 dogs died in this tragedy were restricted to an onboard kennel, where they were walked and cared for by crewmembers.

An emotional story, to me more touching than the story of Jack and Rose, is also associated with one of the dogs killed in Titanic disaster. There was a Great Dane among unlucky dogs owned by Ann Elizabeth Isham. She climbed out of a lifeboat after being informed that her dog was too big to join her, therefore has been returned to the ship’s kennel. A few days after the sinking, her body was found by a recovery ship, clutching her darling dog.

Ajmal, Afridi, Rehman and Hafeez -- England have no way out in the ODI series opener today at Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, UAE (Feb. 13) – After being outclassed by Pakistan in the Test series England certainly had a tough task ahead to prove their presence in the ODI series starting today. It will be interesting to see the strategy of England as they are set to face Pakistan in the first of the 4-match ODI series today here at Abu Dhabi Cricket Stadium.

England have no way out in the ODI series opener today at Abu Dhabi
In the current series, the Pakistan’s squad for the four ODIs against England is a very balanced one with the right blend of fine batsmen, quality all-rounders and world class bowlers. While Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq bring their experience into play in the middle order, Pakistan also have talented youngsters like Imran Farhat, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal and Azhar Ali.

The presence of all-rounders like Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik provides the added strength to both batting and the bowling departments.

Although England has been thrashed by Pakistan in the Test series but the presence of youngsters like Craig Kieswetter, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow promises to add some freshness to the English batting, which has loads of difficulties in facing quality spin attack from Pakistan during Test series.

Pakistan thrashed England in Dubai -- Saeed Ajmal with 10-wicket haul named man of the match

DUBAI, UAE (Jan. 19) – Pakistan won the first Test against England by a huge margin of 10 wickets on the third day of the match here at Dubai Sports Complex, Dubai

Saeed Ajmal with 10-wicket haul named man of the match

Muhammad Hafeez struck boundary to take the score to 15 needed for the victory as England were all out for 160 in the second innings giving only 15-runs target to Pakistan for victory in the first Test.

Graeme Swann was the last wicket to fall off Saeed Ajmal who took his tally to 10 wickets in this match. James Anderson stood unbeaten at 15.
England has a nightmarish start yet again in the second innings but this time man in-charge was experienced Umar Gul who struck early not once or twice but thrice, picking up wickets of Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen at 25.

Umar Gul bruises the England’s hope to control the things after they fought back quite impressively and succeeded to curtail Pakistan on just 338 in the first session on third day of the first Test.

Veteran pacer Umar Gul led the proceedings for Pakistan in this innings and picked up 4 wickets giving away 63 runs. First innings destroyer Saeed Ajmal has also picked up three wickets while Abdur Rehman struck at the later stages to claim three wickets.

Anderson and Broad helps England fight back on day 2 of 1st Test against Pakistan

DUBAI, UAE (Jan. 19) – Pakistan will resume their first innings today at 288/7 on the third day of the first Test being played at Dubai Sports Complex, Dubai.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad celebrate England's fightback late in the day
Pakistan is 96 runs ahead of England’s first innings score of 192. England bowlers have a pretty decent job to curtail Pakistan under 300-mark on the day two. They never allowed playing Pakistani batsmen with freedom of mind and the willow in their hands.

The pick of the bowlers was definited Stuart Broad who started things happen for England when he cleaned Taufeeq Umar off-stumps with a gem of beautiful ball. Then it was Broad who picked up the second wicket of Azhar Ali.

Benedict Cumberbatch proved real-life Sherlock Holmes in kidnapping ordeal in South Africa

LONDON, UK (Jan 12) – Sherlock Holmes star Benedict Cumberbatch found himself in a scary real-life drama when he was kidnapped at gunpoint almost 7 years back.

Benedict Cumberbatch proved real-life Sherlock Holmes in kidnapping ordeal in South Africa
Mr Cumberbatch, who has won masses of fans in the hit BBC series based on the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was filming the mini-series ‘To The Ends of the Earth’ in St Lucia on the northeast coast of South Africa near Mozambique when he confronted with a kidnapping gang armed with guns.

Sharing the story of his kidnapping with the Daily Star; the 35-year-old Cumberbatch, who is currently filming The Hobbit in New Zealand, admitted he thought he would die.

Scratching his memories Cumberbatch told the newspaper that he had been travelling back to his hotel after learning scuba-diving and he was accompanied by the actress Denise Black and a South African friend when they were attacked after their car blew a tyre.

A gang of six kidnappers struck as they were trying to change the tyre, forcing them into a car before driving off, he continued his story.

"They said: 'Put your hands on your head, don't look at us,' and were frisking us for drugs, money, weapons. Then they bundled us into the car," he said.

I could see the headlight beams bumping over the dirt track and I thought of shallow graves.

"By the end of the night I was tied up next to Denise."

When the gang stopped, they forced Mr Cumberbatch into the boot of the car.
He said: "But I argued my way out," he said. "I said: 'If you leave me in here, it's not the lack of air, it's the small space. There's a problem with my heart and my brain.'

"I just tried to explain to them: 'I will die, possibly have a fit, and it will be a problem for you. I will be a dead Englishman in your car. Not good.'

"They shut the boot and had an argument, and then pulled me out."

He added: "I kind of thank God I had the presence of mind to give them the idea that it would be better to keep me alive. And the other two hadn't been harmed.

"It taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. It's made me want to live a life slightly less ordinary."

The final price was well above the pre-sale estimates of £10-20Kmade for the dress. The successful bidder was the ‘Fundacion Museo De La Moda’, a private fashion museum in Chile.

The Chilean foundation based at Santiago has already made three donations - each of £10,000 - to separate children's charities including a hospice and a project that helps seriously ill babies.

Thursday, Nov. 03: Judge Jeremy Cooke Sentenced Varying Jail Terms for Pakistani Cricketers Involved in Spot-fixing

Salman Butt            Muhammad Aif         Muhammad Amir

LONDON (Nov 03) – Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and two of his teammates, pacers Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Amir, were today sentenced jail terms from 6 months to 30 months after being found guilty of spot-fixing, making them the first cricketers ever to be imprisoned for corruption.

Butt was sentenced to two and a half years, Asif was handed a one-year term, while the 19-year-old Amir was sentenced to six months of prison time by the Southwark Crown Court here.

Three of Pakistani cricketers, involved in the most serious sports’ corruption scandal in more than a decade, will know their fate today (Thursday, Nov. 03) as the court finished hearing yesterday.

Former Pakistani test captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Amir were found guilty of spot fixing during a test match against England in 2010. Aisf and Amir bowled deliberate no-balls during the match on the stipulated timings set by so-called sports’ agent Mazhar Majeed, who pleaded guilty to the charges before the trial along with Muhammad Amir.
Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif have continuously been denying the allegations of spot-fixing, but both were found guilty on Tuesday of conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments. Now they are facing possible 7-year jail term.
On Wednesday, Judge Jeremy Cooke spent the day in court listening the final explanatory statements from the lawyers of all three cricketers on behalf of players. Cooke will consider the case overnight before delivering his final verdict about sentences at London's Southwark Crown Court at 10 a.m. local time Thursday.
