Space Shuttle Atlantis Took Off from Kennedy Space Center for Last Historical Mission |
ATLANTIS, FL (July 8) - The Space Shuttle Atlantis takes off for its final flight, in spite of predictions that weather might have delayed this final shuttle mission, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is on its way to the International Space Station (ISS), in what will be the final mission of the United States’ 30-year-long space shuttle program.
Atlantis’ 12-day last space voyage will mark the end of an era in human spaceflight, after which the U.S will have to rely on Russia to send astronauts to space until a replacement US capsule can be ready for the space trip.”
The mission, the 135th flight of the shuttle, will carry a year's worth of food to the International Space Station and nearly a tonne of science equipment. Much of the payload is taken up with spare parts, from computers to life support systems.
There are four crew members aboard Atlantis. Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley and mission specialists, Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim.
