| Top Al-Qaeda Operative, Abu Hafs al-Shahri, Killed in Pakistan |
Abu Hafs al-Shahri, an alleged al Qaeda’s chief of operations in Pakistan, was reportedly involved in coordinating anti-American conspiracies in the region and involved closely with Pakistani Taliban operatives to carry out attacks in Pakistan.
As it is not disclosed that how the al-Shahri was actually killed but U.S. armed drone planes are frequently targeting al Qaeda and Taliban militants in Pakistan; therefore, it is suspected that al-Shahri might be killed in any such drone attack.
Al-Shahri was believed to be a successor to al Qaeda's second-in-command, Atiyah Abdul Rahman, who was killed in late August this year. In addition to Abdul Rahman's death, Pakistan's security sources revealed the arrest of Younis al-Mauritani in the Quetta area on September 5. Al-Mauritani was also involved in planning multiple attacks on European countries similar to those in India's financial capital, Mumbai, in 2008.
After the death of al-Shahri; Egyptian national Ayman al-Zawahiri, long-time deputy of Osama bin Laden and most probable replacement of him, is the only one of the network's nine top figures at the time of the September 11, 2001, attacks to remain active.
