CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Mon, Jul 23) – James Holmes, the suspected gunman of
worst mass-shooting in US history, makes his first court appearance in
Colorado.
James Holmes' looked dazed in first court appearance |
The 24-year-old Holmes looked dazed in court today, the first time he has
been seen in public since he allegedly killed 12 people and wounded another 58 in
a wild shootout during a showing of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight
Rises."
James Holmes shuffled into court in a maroon jailhouse jumpsuit with his
hands cuffed, sat virtually motionless during the hearing, his eyes drooping as
the judge advised him of the severity of the case. At one point, Holmes simply
closed his eyes.
Holmes' appearance raised questions among some observers about his mental
competency.
The court appearance came in what is technically known as an
advisement, a first appearance designed to tell a defendant of his or her
rights in the case. Holmes was told he is being held on suspicion of
first-degree murder.
Formal charges are to be presented next Monday.
