Fire at Fukushima's Reactor No. 4 Increased the Threat of Nuclear Radiation

TOKYO – Japan rushed to prevent a disaster following a fire broke out on Wednesday in a nuclear plant that started emitting low level of radiation blowing into Tokyo. It not only created an international alarming situation but forced some of the residents to run away from the capital.

According to news on Public broadcaster NHK after several hours of fire at the building housing the No.4 reactor of the plant in Fukushima, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo; the fire was no longer evident at the facility devastated by earthquake.

Fukushima plant operator TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) in a statement informed that they have a plan to put boric acid, a fire retardant, on the plant; while experts suggest the radiation discharge into the air is more probably due to the fire caught by spent fuel rods in a cooling pool at the No. 4 reactor.

Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said two workers were missing after blasts at the facility a day earlier blew a hole in the building housing the No. 4 reactor.

In the first hint of international frustration at the pace of updates from Japan, Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said he wanted more timely and detailed information.
