Heavy Battle Between Rebels and Gaddafi Forces Outside Sirte; While International Community Set to Meet on Tuesday

TRIPOLI - Libyan rebels are battling it out against the pro-Gaddafi forces outside Sirte, Muammar Gadhafi's hometown and stronghold.

Muammar Gaddafi's forces fired heavy weapons at rebels overnight and retook a small town east of the Libyan leader's home city, rebels and witnesses said.

The irregular bang of heavy weapons could be heard on Tuesday morning outside Nawfaliyah, which lies about 150 km (90 miles) from Sirte, Gaddafi's birthplace and a military base. But it is now clarified that Sirte is sill under Gaddafi’s control and the claim made by rebel sources is yet to materialize.

In the mean while Western and Arab nations are scheduled to meet in London Tuesday to sort out an exit for Col. Muammar Gaddafi, Libya’s long time leader.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Arab League, the African Union and around 40 foreign ministers were scheduled to join the talks, seeking to increase the pressure on Gaddafi to quit for the best interest of Libya.

No representative from Libya’s opposition was expected to attend the conference.
