SANAA, Yemen (June 3) – At least six guards were killed and the embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh got injured along with his eight key officials in an attack from opposition tribesmen on today (Friday/June 03) .
Political Protest Turns into civil war in Yemen |
Reportedly, opposition tribesmen committed to depose him, attacked his palace with rockets on Friday in a major uprising of nearly two weeks of fighting with pro-government forces.
According to official sources; President Saleh got slight injuries to the neck, and state-run TV channel aired a announcement saying he was "in good health" and would address to the public within hours.
But the reports later on suggest that the President’s injuries are quite more than slight as he was, reportedly, shifted to the Defense Ministry Hospital after getting immediate medical attention from the medical facilities in his Palace. President Saleh's announced public address was also deferred "because of scratches on his face."
Anti-government demonstrators have been trying since February to get rid of more than 40-year long regime and throw out Saleh with a wave of peaceful protests that has brought out hundreds of thousands daily in capital Sanaa and other major cities.
Now the political crisis has transformed into a struggle for power between Yemen's two most powerful families; President Saleh's and the al-Ahmar family, who headed Yemen's most powerful tribal confederation, called the Hashid.
But it was the first time that tribal fighters have openly targeted President Saleh's palace in fighting that has pounded Sanaa since May 23.
