8.8-magnitude Earthquake Jolted Japan Triggered Tsunami and Top-level Evacuation alerts Issued

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake jolted north-eastern Japan on Friday, causing buildings to rock in Tokyo and generating a tsunami alert, according to local media reports.

Public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by the tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture.

The quake was initially measured as a magnitude 7.9 but was upgraded to magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time and was cantered near the east coast of Honshu, about 231 miles northeast of Tokyo, according a revised reading put out by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The meteorological agency issued its top-level evacuation alerts for the entire Japanese coast, Russia and the Mariana Islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
