AL-ZAWIYAH, Libya— Col. Muammar Gaddafi's regime proved growing confidence Friday after taking control of a strategic city near Tripoli again after many days of persistent shelling against protesters-turned-rebels as it reinforced its hold on the capital and adjacent areas.
Pro-Gaddafi forces also took control of a key oil town in the east and fought to remove rebels who took shelter among towering storage containers of crude oil and gas in nearby facilities.
Al-Zawiyah's main square, which had been a key centre of confrontation to the west of the capital, had the signs of battle, and the streets were crowded with tanks as loyalists waving green flags rallied among a strong presence of uniformed pro-Gaddafi forces and snipers.
With Gaddafi's loyalists also on the verge against rebels in the east, Western nations seemed to be in confusion over how to stop the carnage in Libya.
