Law enforcement agencies were hunting Monday for Desmonte Leonard
of Montgomery, who allegedly opened
fire Saturday night at an apartment complex near Auburn
University after a scuffle with
some of the victims over a woman. He faces three counts of capital murder.
Police urged the suspect to turn
himself in. Authorities are also searching for two other persons of interest.
Tommy Dawson, Auburn Police Chief, said Leonard escaped from the spot in a
white Chevrolet that he dumped on the way back to Montgomery,
about 55 miles away. Police believed he was in the Montgomery
area.
Court records show Montgomery
police arrested Leonard in 2008 on a charge of carrying a pistol without a
license, after stopping a suspected stolen vehicle and finding him inside.
Documents available online didn't show whether the case was ever resolved, but
Leonard was freed on bond within days.
In 2009 he was charged for assault after shooting a man in groin. Leonard
has also been involved in two child support cases.
