CHRISTCHURCH - A trivial earthquake of 6.3-magnitude has hit Christchurch city, one of the major New Zealand cities, causing extensive devastation with numerous fatalities reported soon after the tragedy and the total death toll still undecided.
The earthquake is thought to be an aftershock from the September 2010 earthquake of 7.3-magnitude which struck Christchurch but did not claim any lives as it struck in the middle of the night.
The earthquake on Tuesday local time smacked around lunchtime, and there are reports that transport buses have been compressed by wreckage falling from building.
There initial reports also pointing towards many people got trapped in the debris of buildings, including Forsyth Barr workers trapped on the 12th floor of a 17 story building where the stairwell has been destroyed.
Rescue operations are in progress. Local hospitals are preparing to receive hundreds of injured people.
