BERLIN - According to sources from Germany’s Foreign Ministry; two German journalists detained by Iranian authorities, in October last year, have been released and in the custody of German Consulate officials in Tabrez, northwestern Iranian city.
The two Germans, a reporter and a photographer for the German tabloid Bild am Sonntag, got involved in one of the many conflicts between Iran and the West. Both journalists arrested after interviewing the son of a woman, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani - the mother of two has been found guilty of infidelity and ruled to death by stoning, creating extensive global rage.
During the period of detention, Iranian officials blamed them of a many of severe felonies from spying to having links to groups of Iranian exiles.
Finally, they were charged of performing acts against country's national security. Saturday's state TV report did not specify the so-called offences in detail.
An Iranian court on Saturday sentenced a 20-month prison for both German journalists. The court converted the prison sentence to a fine of $50,000 each, state television reported.
