Post-Yasi Evaluations: The Bruce Highway Between Townsville and Cairns Reopened


CAIRNS - The Bruce Highway, between Townsville and Cairns, has reopened on priority basis with special instructions to emergency and rescue operation officials. The reopening of Highway will made some people to see the devastation of Cyclone Yasi for the first time. 

According to further reports; shops are being reopened along the Cassowary Coast to let inhabitants to buy food again.

Almost all of Cairns is back online. Ergon Energy has repaired power supply to thousands of homes in the past 24 hours, but a huge number of 67,000 properties are still deprived of power supply. 

Anna Bligh, Queensland Premier, said that four days of catastrophe the full degree of Tropical Cyclone Yasi's impact is becoming clearer. She had a trip to Mission Beach and Tully and instructed to demolish the damaged high school.

She further informed that an initial evaluation of the cyclone zone shows 854 buildings have been damaged, 340 substantially, with 23 of them condemned.
