Police and Security Forces Used Tear Gas to Disperse Opposition Rally in Central Tehran

TEHRAN, Iran – Iranian police used sheer force to disperse the tens of thousands of protesters gathered in central Tehran's Enghelab (Revolution) square and in Imam Hussain square, on the call of opposition to show the unity with Egyptian revolutionary forces.

The clashes were also reported between police and demonstrators as police used tear gas against them; while receiving garbage cans from the crowd in the reaction.

After the Sunday’s call from Iran opposition on the internet, Iran's security authorities disconnect phone lines and barricaded the home of an opposition leader to stop him attending the called rally. The rally is the first major show of strength for Iran's suppressed opposition in more than a year.

Police and security officials spread into the streets of Tehran to defy the marches, which officials concern could turn into protests against Iran's ruling system. Security forces on motorcycles could also be seen hunting protesters through the streets, according to eyewitnesses.

Foreign media were stopped from covering street protests in Iran.
