TRIPOLI – Heavy gunfire has taken down the Libyan capital of Tripoli. According to BBC correspondent machinegun and heavy weapons fire could be heard across the city.
On Sunday, early in the morning, repeated gunfire bursts were heard around Tripoli. Just one day after Col. Gaddafi loyal forces entered in tanks rolled into the opposition-held city, Al-Zawiyah, 50 kilometers west of Tripoli. According to eyewitnesses who contacted BBC told that the key area which is under siege around the airport.
Reportedly, rebel forces took control of a key oil port and pushed toward Muammar Gaddafi's hometown in a swing for both sides in the bloody battle for control of Libya.
The to and fro successes from both sides hinted a progressively long and violent battle that could last weeks or months and turned the country ever closer to civil war.
It was not immediately clear who was firing on Sunday.
