BENGHAZI – Reportedly, a U.S. fighter jet, F-15E Strike Eagle, crashed in Libya apparently due to equipment break down but both pilots were managed to eject in time and were back in American hands with only minor injuries, U.S. officials said Tuesday.
Lt. Cmdr. Karin Burzynski, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Africa Command, told the fighter jet was on a mission Monday night against Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi's air defenses when it crashed at 2130 GMT (5:30 p.m. EDT).
Mohammed Ali, a spokesperson for the Libyan opposition, said the U.S. plane crashed about 25 miles (40 km) away from the eastern city Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city and main stronghold of Libyan rebels.
