Quetta Coalmine Blast: Death Toll Reaches 19 While Dozens Still Missing

QUETTA – In a tragic coalmine accident which took place in Sorenj, some 45 kilometres from the provincial capital, on Sunday; the death toll reached to 19 and dozens are still missing while the rescue operations are under way, The News reported. There were 52 workers in the mine at the time of blast in 6,000-foot-deep tunnel, , Chief Inspector Mines Iftikhar Ahmed told media.

Reportedly, the initial investigations show that the explosion that caused such a big destruction was triggered just due to coarse carelessness, specifically not following the mine closures instructions from provincial mines rescue department.

Preliminary reports indicated that the explosion in the coalmine went on at 1:30am, while the rescue operation was begun at 7:00am after several hours of the tragic incident. Due to such cruel and unnecessary delay, all the miners may have lost their lives and there are no chances of anybody to survive except a miracle do happen, said a mineworker present at the site.
