Russia Evacuated 11,000 Residents From Kurlis Islands - No Damages Reported

MOSCOW – Reacting promptly to tsunami warning after 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan; Russian authorities on Friday evacuated about 11,000 residents from coastal areas on Pacific islands. 

According to regional emergency officials the waves struck quite a few towns and villages on the Kurils but did no damage. The islands are situated as close as six miles (10 kilometers) from Japan's Hokkaido Island.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told that a gigantic three-meter wave struck the village of Malokurilskoye and some other villages but with lower water levels. There were no instant reports of damage.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its facilities on the islands had suffered no damage.
