US Defense Secretary Robert Gates Arrived in Afghanistan on a Surprise Visit

KABUL – According to the President’s spokesperson; President Hamid Karzai reiterated that the apology was insufficient in the case of the killing of the nine Afghan boys, who were 9 to 15 years old, as a result of NATO air strike in Kunar province.

Gen. David Petraeus, the American commander in Afghanistan, attended an Afghan National Security Council meeting and explained that the incident was a mistake and apologized to the Afghan people; but the Afghan president rejected the apology and said that civilian casualties worsen the relationship between Afghanistan and the United States.

On the other hand, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates had a surprise visit of Afghanistan Monday to determine the progress in the war with the Taliban amid tensions with President Hamid Karzai.

General David Petraeus received Robert Gates on Monday; who’s due to hold meetings and press conference with Hamid Karzai.

Gates' visit is expected to be dominated by conflicts over the deaths of civilians in international military operations.
