Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan Might Be Cancelled on Account of Match Fixing Scandal

TOKYO – Mr. Hanaregoma, the head of Japan's sumo association, discloses a decision on whether to cancel the next tournament over a match fixing scandal is doubtful to be made this weekend.

Japan's top-selling paper, The Yomiuri daily, revealed on Saturday the March 13-27 Spring Grand Sumo Tournament would be cancelled due to the match fixing scandal.

As reported earlier here; thirteen sumo wrestlers have already confessed the allegations of fixing the matches via text messages.

But JSA chairman told media that a decision on whether to cancel the tournament should await the results of the association's extraordinary board meeting this weekend.

If the association decides to cancel the tournament, it would be the first cancellation since 1946.
