Indonesian Island of Java jolted by strong earthquake on Tuesday (May 17) |
JAKARTA, Indonesia (May 17) – A strong earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Java on early Tuesday morning, seismologists said.
According to details; a 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook south of Java, Indonesia, at 08:14 local time (00:14 GMT) on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The depth of the quake is reported as 22.20 Km; while the epicentre is determined to be at 9.25 degrees south latitude and 112.57 degrees east longitude.
It is 140 km south of Malang, Java, and 718 km southeast of Jakarta. There are immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Indonesia is on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions also occur frequently in this region.
