French Open 2011 - Nadal Through to Second Round |
PARIS, France (May 25) - This was the crazy afternoon when defending champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal, Roland Garros and the entire rhythm of this grand slam tournament were almost hijacked by a 6’ 9” American with size-15 shoes, a enormous serve, and a reputation for being something of a clay-court master.
Top seed Rafael Nadal, bidding for a record-equalling sixth Roland Garros crown, was staring down the barrel of surprise removal after allowing Isner to establish a 2-1 sets lead.
Nadal re-took control of proceedings in the fourth set, however, before completing a 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 6-4 victory that sets him up for a second-round meeting with countryman Pablo Andujar.
