MANILA, Philippines - - Nine people are reported dead and more than 100,000 villagers were forced to escape from towns threatened by landslides after Tropical storm Aere hit the northeastern Philippines.

The storm struck into Catanduanes province on Sunday with winds of 85 km per hour and gusts of 100 km per hour.

It triggered landslides and floods, disrupted transportation and knocked out power in some towns.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a statement that 9 people were killed due to landslides, drowning and fallen power lines, mostly in the eastern Bicol region and Catanduanes.

As per reports; a aged woman drowned while trying to cross a bloated river in Daraga town in Albay province, about 340 kilometres southeast of Manila, and a man was electrocuted in a flooded village in Libon town.

Regional disaster-response director Bernardo Alejandro said that a landslide buried a house in Camarines Sur province's Balatan Township at dawn, killing three people, including a baby.
