MANILA, Philippines — According to police sources; 16 people were kidnapped, mostly teachers also including two students, by gunmen allegedly from Perez kidnap group in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
According to initial radio reports; the school officials were attending a graduation ceremony when an armed group arrived and dragged them into 2 vehicles.
Reynaldo Rafar, regional police chief, said Saturday that the gunmen took the hostages in the remote forests of southern Agusan del Sur province in the western part of Mindanao Island.
Alvin Magdamit, mayor of Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur province, informed that their crisis committee is negotiating for the release of the seized victims.
"We are closely monitoring the situation. We want assurance of the victims' safety," said Magdamit.
Same kind of incident took place almost two years back when about 50 villagers were kidnapped and ultimately released after several days but only after intervention by Manobo tribal elders.
